It
appears that the North Eastham Wind Project was dealt a death blow yesterday.
The Eastham Board of Selectmen agreed to send a letter to the Massachusetts
Technology Collaborative formally notifying them that the town could not
complete the requirements needed to continue with the Standard Financial Offer
which had been awarded to Eastham a year ago. This marked the formal end
of the funding for the $150,000 grant needed to pursue completion of the North
Eastham Wind Project.
This is clearly a MAJOR victory for the project's opponents!
Many thanks to all of who helped through their continuous support and hard work!
We must remain vigilant to insure that this project doesn't rear its head again
in Eastham. There are still bills pending in the state legislature that
could make it much easier to site industrial wind turbines in Eastham.
Town meeting is Monday, May 5. The ad hoc committee wind turbine zoning
bylaw is on the warrant. However, without the support of any town body, it
is unlikely that it will garner the required 2/3 majority vote needed for it to
pass. There is also a problem that occurs if it fails. Under MA law,
the failed bylaw couldn't be brought before the town meeting again for two
years. For these reasons, we understand that the zoning proposal will be
withdrawn from the floor of the town meeting by the lead petitioners.
The job of developing a wind zoning bylaw for Eastham will now fall on the
Planning Board. Stay Tuned.
For now, we can savor this victory and rest a bit easier.
